H1N1 (Swine Flu): The H1N1 influenza virus began circulating in the United States in April, 2009. The virus continued to cause illness over the summer months, a period in which virus activity is typically not common. The number of cases is on the rise, and it is important to take everyday precautions to limit the chance of becoming infected:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when your cough or sneeze, or use the inside of your elbow if a tissue is not available.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
- Alcohol based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people if possible.
One big difference between H1N1 and the Season Flu is the target population most at risk. People aged 65 or older, who are usually at the highest risk of illness from Seasonal Flu, are the least likely to get sick from H1N1 based on data gathered so far. Scientists theorize that many older Americans may have been exposed to a similar flu virus earlier in their lives which may provide some immunity to H1N1.
H1N1 (Swine Flu) Vaccine: Initial doses of this vaccine became available in limited quantities in October, 2009. This vaccine does not replace the seasonal flu vaccine – it is intended to be given in addition to the seasonal flu vaccine to provide protection against the H1N1 virus. Supplies of the vaccine are expected to become more readily available in the coming months. The vaccine will be administered in three phases, based on the populations most at risk of H1N1 infection:
PHASE 1 – Pregnant women, healthcare and emergency medical services personnel, children 6 months through 24 years of age, household contacts and caregivers of infants younger than 6 months of age, and adults 25 through 64 years of age with a medical condition that puts them at high risk for complications of influenza.
PHASE 2 – Once there is enough vaccine to immunize the groups in Phase 1, all adults aged 25-64 will be eligible for vaccination
PHASE 3 – The final vaccination phase involves all adults 65 years of age and older.
